Holistic Therapies at Provive Wellness
Holistic Therapies at Provive Wellness
Recovery is not just a clinical process — it is a human one. The human experience lives in the body, in the breath, in the nervous system, and in the spaces between words. At Provive Wellness, we believe that lasting healing from addiction and mental health conditions requires care that reaches all of those places.
That is why every level of our programming — from our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) — integrates holistic therapies alongside evidence-based clinical treatment. Our holistic offerings are not optional extras or weekend activities. They are a core part of how we treat the whole person.
SAMHSA’s principles of whole-person care recognize that effective behavioral health treatment must address the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of a person’s life simultaneously. Holistic therapies are how we put that principle into practice.
What holistic therapy means at Provive:
- Holistic therapy treats the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — rather than symptoms alone
- It is used alongside evidence-based modalities like CBT, DBT, and ACT — not instead of them
- Sessions are facilitated by trained practitioners and integrated into the clinical day
- Holistic programming addresses what talk therapy sometimes cannot reach: stored trauma in the body, chronic nervous system dysregulation, and disconnection from self and purpose
- Every holistic offering at Provive has a clinical rationale and is selected based on documented research
The science behind holistic therapy has grown substantially over the past two decades. Research from the National Institutes of Health, the Cochrane Library, and leading academic medical centers has documented measurable benefits from modalities once considered purely alternative. A 2022 Cochrane review of 21 randomized controlled trials found moderate-certainty evidence that music therapy significantly reduces substance craving. A 2024 systematic review in BMC Psychiatry found equine-assisted services produced meaningful reductions in PTSD symptom severity in military veterans. A 2023 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports confirmed breathwork’s effects on autonomic nervous system regulation. These are not anecdotal outcomes — they are documented in peer-reviewed literature.
Holistic therapies work because trauma and emotional pain are not stored only in the mind. They live in the body. A nervous system shaped by years of stress, substance use, or traumatic experience cannot be fully reached by cognition alone. Movement, sound, breath, and connection — with animals, with art, with music, with nature — offer pathways that language sometimes cannot.

Holistic therapies at Provive are offered on a rotating weekly schedule and are available to all PHP and IOP clients at our Wayne, PA and Scranton, PA locations. Some offerings are group-based; others are individual. All are coordinated with your primary treatment team.
People who find it difficult to access their emotions through conversation — those who feel frozen, disconnected, or numb — often find that holistic therapies open something that words alone could not. These modalities work at a level below conscious thought, creating openings that clinical work can then deepen.
