Spirituality in Recovery at Provive Wellness
Spirituality in Recovery at Provive Wellness
At some point in recovery, questions that don’t fit neatly into a therapy session tend to surface. Why did this happen to me? Who am I without this? What is my life actually for? These are not pathological questions — they are natural, human, and important. They are the kinds of questions that people who have been through suffering often ask, and that people who have never looked closely at their own lives sometimes never get to. Recovery, in this sense, is not only the removal of a harmful substance. It is an invitation to build a life that has something worth protecting. Spirituality in recovery is about finding — or rebuilding — that foundation.
Provive Wellness’s approach to spirituality in recovery is explicitly non-denominational. It does not assume any particular religious background, and it does not require belief in anything specific. It invites exploration — of values, of meaning, of what you care about most, and of the connections in your life that give it weight. These are universal human concerns, accessible to people of every faith tradition and to people with no religious background whatsoever.
Spirituality in recovery is offered within our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at our Wayne, PA and Scranton, PA locations, coordinated with your clinical treatment team.
Spirituality in recovery at Provive explores:
- Values clarification — identifying what you genuinely care about and want your life to reflect
- Meaning and purpose — what gives your life direction, and how recovery can deepen rather than diminish that
- Connection — to others, to something larger than yourself, to the world beyond your immediate circumstances
- Forgiveness and self-compassion — including toward yourself
- The relationship between spirituality and long-term sobriety, as documented in the research literature
- Practices of stillness, reflection, and presence that do not require any particular belief system
The research on spirituality and addiction recovery is substantial. A 2025 review published in PMC examined the integration of spirituality into treatment for substance use disorders and concluded that a comprehensive approach addressing the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of addiction supports not only cessation of substance use but full rehabilitation and personal growth, leading to sustained recovery. A 2023 study published in the Journal of Substance Use and Addiction Treatment found that spiritual well-being was positively associated with posttreatment abstinence — particularly through its effect on social support and personal resilience. Guidelines published in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry in 2023, drawing on a robust body of research, called for spirituality and religiosity to be integrated into the prevention and treatment of alcohol and substance use disorders. A 2024 paper in PMC examined patient and physician perspectives on spirituality in substance use disorder recovery in primary care settings, confirming that spirituality is an important component of recovery for many individuals.
It is worth being clear about what spirituality in recovery is not. It is not about converting to a religion. It is not about adopting beliefs you don’t hold. It is not a euphemism for twelve-step programming, though it shares some philosophical ground. It is an honest exploration of the questions that become unavoidable when you are building a new life — and the recognition that a life rooted in values and connection is simply more durable than one that is not.
What spirituality in recovery programming at Provive looks like:
- Facilitated group discussions exploring meaning, values, and purpose in a non-prescriptive format
- Reflective exercises including journaling, meditation, and contemplative practices drawn from multiple traditions
- Exploration of forgiveness — of self and others — as a psychological and spiritual practice
- Discussion of how different spiritual frameworks (religious and secular) approach recovery and resilience
- Integration with the clinical framework of your overall treatment program
People often arrive at spirituality in recovery with skepticism — particularly if they’ve had complicated relationships with organized religion, or if the word “spirituality” feels unfamiliar or loaded. That skepticism is welcome in the room. No one is asked to arrive with beliefs they don’t have. The invitation is simply to sit with the questions that matter, and to discover — or rediscover — what you are actually living for.
